Kamto Keeps Up Criticism of ELECAM-UN Deal

Barely five months before the October 2025 presidential elections in Cameroon, Maurice Kamto, leader of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM) and presidential hopeful, raises concerns about a “secret” agreement between Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) and the United Nations.

In a statement posted on social media today, Kamto and his political allies questioned the lack of transparency surrounding the convention signed on 9 May 2025.

The CRM, along with the Political Alliance for Change (PAC) and the People for Change, argue that ELECAM’s silence on the agreement’s details is alarming, given the upcoming presidential election in October. Kamto emphasized the need for all candidates advocating for electoral transparency to demand the immediate publication of the agreement’s terms.

Although ELECAM issued a press release on 15 May, it failed to disclose the specific provisions of the convention. Kamto and his allies insist that voters have the right to understand whether this agreement introduces any new measures that could impact the election process.

Amid rising tensions, opposition leaders have pledged to monitor the situation closely, vowing to protect the integrity of the electoral process. As pressure mounts, Cameroonians await further clarification from ELECAM regarding its partnership with the UN.

No response has yet been given by the country’s electoral institution ELECAM.
